Summary
The theft of the Rembrandt and Vermeer paintings from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is well known but how and why did Gardner acquire them in the first place? This talk will examine the culture of collecting in Boston at the turn of the 20th century and compare Gardner's collection with that at the Museum of Fine Arts. Why were Rembrandt and Vermeer so sought after and who verified the authenticity of Old Master paintings? The world of art collecting has always been filled with intrigue—about the paintings themselves but also about the people who bought and sold them. Marie Frank is an associate professor of Art and Architectural History in the Department of Cultural Studies at University of Massachusetts, Lowell
