Summary
Recent events such as terrorist attacks, disease outbreaks, and storms have taught us that emergencies come in all shapes and sizes and can take place without warning. As a result of these incidents, we have learned that personal and community-based preparedness can help reduce the effects of disasters. Staff from the MA Department of Public Health Office of Preparedness and Emergency Management will be here to share how the Commonwealth both prepares for and responds to these disasters; offer easy tips for individuals and households to take to better prepare; and introduce ways to become involved throughout the community. The Office of Preparedness and Emergency Management (OPEM) coordinates overall planning and preparedness efforts for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. OPEM collaborates with its partners and stakeholders to ensure that all public health and healthcare partners, as well as local community members, will have the knowledge, plans, and tools to prepare for, respond to, and recover from threats to public health like acts of bioterrorism, outbreaks of infectious disease and other large-scale public health emergencies or mass casualty incidents. OPEM strives to cultivate effective and ongoing federal, state, local, and tribal relationships as it is these relationships that form the cornerstone of preparedness and response efforts. Recent events that have tested our preparedness efforts and fortified our planning and response activities have included disease outbreaks like H1N1, weather events like ice storms and tornadoes, and terrorism incidents like the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings
